Students participate in the following programs depending upon the time of year, student age, and / or student or teacher interest.
Artist in the School The Artist in the School program, funded by the Alaska State Council for the Arts and Auke Bay PTA, provides a 3-week residency for an artist at Auke Bay. In any given year, half of the school works intensively with the artist on a project, and other classes visit the artist during “studio” time to watch him or her work. A systematic rotation ensures that all children will have several opportunities, over the course of their 6 years at Auke Bay, to actively participate.
Discovery Southeast Discovery Southeast is a hands-on field oriented program developed in tandem with the District’s science curriculum. The nature studies activities provided complement the other science instruction offered in the school. All 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students participate in this program, which is funded by the PTA.
School Wide Enrichment Cluster Clusters begin mid-April, occur every Friday for 1 hour until the end of the school yer. Enrichment clusters are non-graded groups of students come together for approximately one hour per week because they share common interests that bind them together and a willingness to work cooperatively within a relatively unstructured learning environment. Cluster activity is directed toward the production of a product or service. Enrichment clusters are not mini-courses! There are no unit or lesson plans. However, a series of start-up activities help students find and focus on aproblem that the majority of the group wants to pursue.
