Procedures for Roll and Write or Flip and Write
Materials Needed:
- Dice
- Deck of Playing Cards – Depending on the age and mathematical ability of the students, difficulty can be adjusted by what number cards are being used. A general rule of thumb- kindergarten and 1st grade students use cards 1-5, with first grades transitioning to 1-10 throughout the year.
- Piece of paper or Roll and Write sheets (listed below in .pdf)
Trace the Numeral
Equation Practice
Kindergarten – Grade 1:
• Roll a dot die – Trace the number on the corresponding number.
• Roll a dot die – Write the number on the paper. (number recognition and writing practice)
• OR Flip two 1-5 cards. Write an equation that shows the sum. (1+4=5)
• Or Flip one 1-5 card. Write an equation that shows the sum doubled.( 2+2=4)
• Or Flip one 1-10 card. Write an equation that shows 1 more.( 8+1=9)
Grade 2 – 3
• Roll two - dot dice, write the equation and sum.
• OR flip two 1-5 cards. Write an equation that shows the product. (end of third grade) (3x4=12)
• OR Stick a 10 and flip a 1-10 card. Write an equation that shows the sum. (10 +5=15 or 6+10=16)
• Or Stick a 10 and flip a 1-10 card. Write an equation that show the difference from 20. (13 + __ = 20)
Grades 4 – 5
• Use 6 – 10 cards. Write an equations that shows the product.
• OR Fip two 1-9 cards. Write an equation that shows the difference from 100. (87+__=100)
• OR flip thee 1-9 cards. Write an equation that shows the difference from 1000. (426+__=1000)
