Additional Programs
Students participate in the following programs depending upon the time of year, student age, and / or student or teacher interest.
Academic Competitions The Spelling Bee and Battle of the Books are special programs that 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers encourage (but don’t require) students to participate in. The Geography Bee is open to 4th and 5th graders. School-wide winners in each category proceed to district and state competitions.
Artist in the School The Artist in the School program, funded by the Alaska State Council for the Arts and Auke Bay PTA, provides a 3-week residency for an artist at Auke Bay. In any given year, half of the school works intensively with the artist on a project, and other classes visit the artist during “studio” time to watch him or her work. A systematic rotation ensures that all children will have several opportunities, over the course of their 6 years at Auke Bay, to actively participate.
Discovery Southeast Discovery Southeast is a hands-on field oriented program developed in tandem with the District’s science curriculum. The nature studies activities provided complement the other science instruction offered in the school. All 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students participate in this program, which is funded by the PTA.
PALS PALS is a violence prevention program where 4th and 5th grade students volunteer to play with and provide opportunities for play for students on the playground. Research has shown that students who are by themselves or not engaged in play on the playground are more likely to be bullied. PALS work to provide alternative games, companionship, and play equipment for children at recess.
