Spelling Bee
Auke Bay’s 2012 spelling bee was held Monday morning, January 23rd, in the gym during an extended power outage. The audience was particularly quiet as the participants spelled challenging words by the light of lanterns. Amy Jo Meiners served as the marshall, keeping spellers calm and lined up for their next word. Christy Odum, Karn Hickok, and Lisa Worden served as the judges. Sheryl Wittig was the pronouncer and moderator. After fourteen rounds, Luke Strickler from Ms. Janicek’s fourth grade class won the spelling bee by correctly spelling the word “temporary”. Ben Ng, a fourth grader in Ms. Harmon’s class placed second. These two spellers advance to the Juneau School District spelling bee, Wednesday, February 8th, 2012 at 6:30 PM in the Harborview Commons. Gage Garnick placed third, Isabella Hanna placed fourth.

Early Release Mondays
During the 2011-2012 school year, the Juneau School District will release students one hour early on the following Mondays. During this time, teachers will work together in small groups to focus on instruction that improves learning in each classroom. This work centers on methods of instruction and individual student progress. Evidence from across the country shows that schools and districts that have been able to significantly improve student success have all used this collaborative team approach.
